Where it came from
Black Cat: The Distant Cat is an original video animation (OVA) produced by the Japanese studio GONZO in 2006. It serves as a side-story accompaniment to the 2005 anime adaptation of the Black Cat manga series created by Kentaro Yabuki. The production emerged during a period of high productivity for GONZO, known for its distinctive blend of traditional animation and early 3D digital effects, and was intended to provide fans with additional narrative depth regarding the protagonist, Train Heartnet, and his associates within the series' noir-inspired bounty hunter setting.
The narrative design of the OVA focuses on the lighter, more comedic side of the characters, contrasting with the more dramatic stakes of the primary series. The animation direction reflects the aesthetic established by the television series, emphasizing the stylized action sequences and sharp character designs that define Yabuki's original work. While the original anime received mixed critical reception due to its deviation from the manga's pacing, this OVA was received primarily as a niche curiosity for dedicated followers of the franchise who appreciated the character interactions.
