Where it came from
Blood Blockade Battlefront, known in Japan as Kekkai Sensen, emerged as a 2015 television anime adaptation of Yasuhiro Nightow's manga series. Produced by Studio Bones and directed by Rie Matsumoto, the series was conceived to capture the chaotic, urban-fantasy atmosphere of Hellsalem's Lot, a city where the human world and the Beyond collide. The production team leaned heavily into a stylized, cinematic aesthetic, aiming to translate Nightow's kinetic visual language into a fluid, jazz-infused motion picture experience.
The series was highly anticipated due to Nightow’s previous success with Trigun and the studio's reputation for high-quality animation. Upon release, it was well-received for its unique visual flair, complex character dynamics, and an evocative soundtrack that underscored the supernatural urban setting. The show's design language, characterized by a vibrant color palette and unconventional framing, cemented its status as a notable entry in the mid-2010s action-fantasy genre.
