Where it came from
The Blood Blockade Battlefront & Beyond OVA, titled King of the Restaurant of Kings, was produced by studio Bones and released in 2018 as a direct follow-up to the second season of the anime adaptation of Yasuhiro Nightow's manga series. It serves as a standalone expansion of the chaotic, supernatural urban setting of Hellsalem’s Lot, focusing on the eccentric interpersonal dynamics of the Libra organization. Like the series that preceded it, the OVA leans into the frenetic visual energy and jazz-infused aesthetic that defined the adaptation's identity.
The design and direction maintain the distinct style established by director Shigehito Takayanagi and the studio's broader creative team. By emphasizing character-driven humor over high-stakes action, the production highlights the studio's commitment to capturing the idiosyncratic tone of Nightow’s original work. Upon its release, it was received as a welcomed return to the series' vibrant world, valued by fans for its faithfulness to the source material's surrealist charm and intricate character designs.
