Where it came from
The Blood Lad: Wagahai wa Neko de wa Nai OVA was released in 2013 as a bonus episode bundled with the limited edition of the tenth volume of Yuuki Kodama's manga series. It was produced by Brain's Base, the same animation studio responsible for the ten-episode television anime adaptation that aired earlier that same year. This special episode focuses on a side story where the protagonist, Staz Charlie Blood, is transformed into a cat, providing a lighter, comedic departure from the primary supernatural narrative.
The visual direction for the project aimed to replicate the stylized, edgy aesthetic of the original manga, which blends urban fantasy with references to otaku subculture. Shigeyuki Miya, who served as the director for the television series, oversaw this production to maintain consistency in tone and character design. Upon its release, the OVA was primarily received as a supplementary treat for established fans of the series, serving as a self-contained narrative expansion rather than an essential component of the overarching plot.
