Where it came from
Blue Dragon: The Seven Dragons of the Heavens, released in 2008, serves as the second season of the anime adaptation based on the Xbox 360 video game series designed by Hironobu Sakaguchi with character concepts by Akira Toriyama. Following the conclusion of the initial series, this installment was produced by Studio Pierrot to continue the narrative of Shu and his shadow, Blue Dragon, as they navigate a world plagued by the mysterious appearance of shadowy entities.
The production sought to expand upon the whimsical yet high-stakes adventure aesthetic established by Toriyama's iconic art style. While the game series was notable for its collaboration between legendary creators, the anime series functioned as an independent expansion of the lore. Upon its release, the series was received as a standard shonen adaptation, recognized primarily by enthusiasts of the broader Blue Dragon franchise for its transition into a new episodic arc that deviated significantly from the source material of the original game.
