Where it came from
Blue Comet SPT Layzner originated as a television anime series directed by Ryosuke Takahashi and produced by Sunrise in 1985. The series was designed to blend the hard sci-fi mecha aesthetics of the time with a Cold War-inspired narrative involving extraterrestrial invasion. When the television broadcast was unexpectedly truncated due to shifting market interests, the 1986 OVA release was commissioned to provide a definitive conclusion to the story, effectively wrapping up the unresolved plot threads for the dedicated fanbase.
The mechanical design of the Layzner and other SPTs, or Super Powered Tracers, was handled by Kunio Okawara. His work sought to distinguish these units from the more bulky, utilitarian robots of earlier years by incorporating sleek, agile frames that emphasized high-speed combat. The OVA’s visual presentation was refined to capitalize on this design philosophy, and it remains well-regarded by enthusiasts of the 1980s real-robot subgenre for successfully transitioning a complex television narrative into a coherent cinematic format.
