Where it came from
Blue Exorcist: Kyoto Saga was released in 2017 as a direct continuation of the anime adaptation of Kazue Kato’s long-running manga series. Produced by A-1 Pictures, the season focuses on the Kyoto Impure King arc, which explores the historical tensions within the True Cross Order and delves deeper into the strained relationship between the brothers Rin and Yukio Okumura as they face an resurrected demonic threat.
The production sought to align more closely with the manga’s specific visual evolution compared to the original 2011 series. Directed by Koichi Hatsumi, the design team emphasized a darker, more atmospheric color palette to match the ominous tone of the Kyoto setting, receiving generally positive recognition for its improved animation fidelity and faithful pacing in adapting the source material's pivotal narrative shifts.
