When Marika Katou learns that her late father was the captain of a pirate ship, it’s the second biggest surprise of her life. The biggest? Learning that his crew needs her to take over her father’s old job due to the terms of their Privateer’s contract! It looks like joining her school’s yacht club is certainly about to pay off for Marika, because who wants to go into space piracy without a bunch of friends their own age to keep it fun? Toss in some outer space rivals, princesses in peril, and a pirate crew pulling double duty as high school teachers, and the next voyage of the good ship Benten Maru is going to be one of the wildest adventures ever!

Where it came from
Bodacious Space Pirates, released in 2012 by the studio Satelight, was adapted from the light novel series Miniskirt Space Pirates written by Yuichi Sasamoto. The series was directed and adapted for television by Tatsuo Sato, who aimed to subvert traditional space opera tropes by centering the narrative on a high school student who unexpectedly inherits the role of a space pirate captain. This tonal shift toward a character-driven, strategic approach rather than purely action-oriented combat helped distinguish the show within the competitive anime landscape of the early 2010s.
The character designs were handled by Akemi Kobayashi, who adapted the original illustrations by Noriyuki Matsumoto into an aesthetic that blended soft, academic visuals with precise mechanical ship designs. Upon its debut, the series was received as a competent and refreshing take on the science fiction genre, praised for its focus on ship management and diplomacy. Its relative grounding in scientific concepts, balanced against the whimsical premise of a school-run pirate crew, earned it a dedicated following and a subsequent feature film in 2014.
