The story centers on Kaede Honjou, who is invited by her friend Risa Shiramine to play a virtual reality MMO game with her. While Kaede doesn't dislike games, what she really, truly dislikes is being in pain. She creates a character named Maple, and decides to put all her points in VIT to minimize pain. As a result, she moves slowly, can't use magic, and even a rabbit can get the best of her. However, as it turns out, she acquires a skill known as "Absolute Defense" as a result of her pumping points into VIT, as well as a "Counter Skill" that works against special moves. Now, with her ability to nullify all damage, she goes on adventures.

Where it came from
BOFURI: I Don't Want to Get Hurt, so I'll Max Out My Defense began as a light novel series written by Yuumikan and illustrated by Koin, serialized online before being published by Kadokawa. The story explores the burgeoning subgenre of VRMMO gaming, centering on a novice player named Maple who invests all her character points into vitality to avoid taking damage, inadvertently becoming an overpowered tank. This premise provided a lighthearted, low-stakes alternative to the more intense death-game tropes popularized by other series in the medium.
The 2020 television anime adaptation was produced by the studio SILVER LINK and directed by Shin Ōnuma and Mirai Minato. The adaptation is recognized for its vibrant animation and its commitment to the cozy, comedic spirit of the original source material. It was well-received by audiences for its focus on camaraderie and unconventional problem-solving, maintaining a consistent tone that emphasized fun and exploration over traditional narratives of heroic struggle.
