Where it came from
Released in 1998, Bomberman & Marbleman's Explosive Side Story was produced by the acclaimed animation studio Madhouse. The series was designed as a tie-in to the popular Bomberman video game franchise, intended to expand the brand's reach into children's television programming during a period when game-to-anime adaptations were experiencing a significant surge in popularity.
The character designs were crafted to capture the whimsical, high-energy aesthetic of the Bomberman universe, focusing on simplified, expressive shapes that lent themselves well to the fast-paced action sequences characteristic of Madhouse productions at the time. Upon its release, it was received as a lighthearted expansion of the franchise, serving primarily to introduce the world of Bomberman to a younger audience who may not have been familiar with the original console games.
