Where it came from
Boukyaku Battery originated as a manga series by Eko Mikawa, serialized in Shonen Jump+ starting in 2018. The story centers on the complex relationship between a once-celebrated middle school battery—a pitcher and catcher duo—who reunite at a public high school in Tokyo. The narrative balances comedic absurdity with poignant reflections on the psychological toll of high-stakes youth sports, subverting traditional shonen tropes by focusing on characters struggling with memory loss and the loss of their former brilliance.
The 2020 original video animation was produced by MAPPA to commemorate the release of the series' seventh volume. Directed by Parako Shinohara, the short served as an early visual adaptation of the manga's unique tone, blending dynamic character designs with the series' signature shift between slapstick humor and melancholy. It was received as a faithful introduction to the source material, highlighting the studio's ability to maintain the distinct aesthetic style established by Mikawa.
