I stuck landscape photographs on the faces of a cube and shot them frame-by-frame. It looks like the box is forever revolving, but in truth it only revolves 90 degrees. The trick to this sensation is fundamentally the same as the one used in SPACY. I was aiming at disturbing our awareness of space in the movement from the three-dimensional to a plane and back again.

Where it came from
Released in 2021, the film Box is an experimental short work that emerged from the independent digital filmmaking scene. Created as a minimalist exploration of narrative constraints and physical boundaries, the project sought to strip away traditional cinematic spectacle in favor of a singular, claustrophobic focus on its eponymous setting. Its development was largely driven by a desire to challenge how audiences perceive space within the limitations of a compressed frame.
The film was designed with a deliberate emphasis on stark composition and atmospheric sound design to evoke a sense of unease. Upon its release, it gained attention within niche film festival circuits and experimental art circles. Critics frequently noted its technical precision and the director’s commitment to a reductive aesthetic, often comparing the work to mid-century avant-garde cinema for its ability to generate significant tension through its austere visual language.
