Where it came from
Boys Be... was produced by Hal Film Maker and released as a thirteen-episode television series in 2000. It is based on the popular manga series written by Masahiro Itabashi and illustrated by Hiroyuki Tamakoshi, which focuses on the romantic entanglements and emotional growth of a group of high school students. The animation sought to capture the earnest, slightly melancholic tone of the source material's coming-of-age narrative.
The adaptation was directed by Masayuki Kojima, who aimed to emphasize the delicate interplay of teenage relationships and the transition into young adulthood. By focusing on the personal arcs of its ensemble cast, the series carved out a niche within the romance genre of the era. Upon its release, it was received as a grounded, character-driven piece of work that resonated with audiences interested in realistic depictions of adolescent life.
