Break Ups

Break Ups is a series of animated shorts produced by the South Korean studio Studio Goindol, created by animator Lee In-soo. The series gained recognition in the 2010s for its minimalist aesthetic and its poignant, often melancholic exploration of the intricacies of modern romantic relationships. Each short typically centers on a single encounter between a couple, capturing the quiet tension and unspoken emotions that precede a final separation.

The visual language of the series is characterized by simple, clean line drawings and a muted color palette, which emphasizes the emotional weight of the dialogue rather than elaborate spectacle. Lee In-soo’s design choice focuses on raw vulnerability, aiming to strip away the artifice of traditional romance stories to present an unfiltered look at human disconnect. The series was well-received by audiences and critics alike, frequently featured at international animation festivals for its ability to convey profound narrative depth through a restrained, almost skeletal style.
