The head monk orders a young acolyte to guard a beautiful cherry tree in the monastery garden while he goes out. But the older man underestimates his colleague’s fondness for sake. As it so happens, a samurai warrior and his servant decide to have a picnic feast in the same garden under the blossoming tree. The acolyte refuses to let them in, but when he smells their sake, his determination is put to the test.... Made in 1968, director Kawamoto’s first puppet film is a moral tale about a disciple who was justly punished for a momentary lapse.

Where it came from
Breaking of Branches is Forbidden is a meditative, experimental film produced by Konami Digital Entertainment. It was released as a visual companion piece during the mid-2000s, a period when the studio was actively exploring the boundaries between traditional gaming aesthetics and cinematic storytelling. The film is characterized by its stark, minimalist imagery and a deliberate, slow-paced narrative structure that departs significantly from the high-octane action associated with the company’s primary software library.
The film’s design emphasizes naturalistic textures and ambient audio, aiming to create an atmosphere of introspection rather than direct engagement. While the specific authorship remains internal to Konami's creative division, the project was received by critics as an artistic anomaly. It served as a testament to the studio's interest in avant-garde media, reflecting an experimental phase where designers were encouraged to move beyond interactive mechanics to focus on atmospheric world-building.
