Breakers

Breakers is a Japanese animated series produced by the studio ALBACROW, which premiered in 2020. The project was conceived as a tribute to the resilience and determination of para-athletes, specifically focusing on sports such as wheelchair basketball, track and field, and goalball. It was created in a cultural climate increasingly centered on the spirit of inclusivity and the lead-up to global athletic competitions, aiming to portray the technical demands and psychological journeys of athletes living with disabilities.

The production design focuses on a grounded, character-driven aesthetic that emphasizes fluid motion and the specific mechanics of paralympic sports equipment. Directed by Masataka Nishikawa, the series was noted for its earnest approach to its subject matter, eschewing melodramatic tropes in favor of a realistic depiction of competitive strategy and personal growth. It has been recognized for its role in bridging the gap between mainstream animation and the representation of disability in media.
