Where it came from
Brigadoon: Marin & Melan was produced by Sunrise and released in 2000 as a 26-episode anime series. Directed by Yoshitomo Yonetani and featuring character designs by Takahiro Kimura, the series was conceived as a unique blend of high-concept science fiction and heartfelt character drama. It occupies a distinct space in the turn-of-the-millennium anime landscape, focusing on the emotional growth of a young girl named Marin who becomes the protector of a mysterious, otherworldly boy named Melan Blue.
The production is noted for its visual style, which integrates traditional animation with digital effects common for the era. Takahiro Kimura’s character designs are celebrated for their expressive quality, which contrasts sharply with the series' increasingly complex and sometimes somber narrative themes. Upon its release, it was received as a somewhat niche but critically respected work, praised for its sincerity and its departure from typical mecha or action-heavy tropes common to the studio at the time.
