Where it came from
Bubble Bath, known in Japan as 'Awa,' is a short animated film produced by NHK in 2002 as part of the innovative 'Ani*Kuri15' project. The initiative was designed to showcase the creative diversity of Japanese animation by commissioning fifteen distinct directors to produce one-minute shorts, allowing established artists to experiment with unconventional narratives and visual styles outside the constraints of feature-length production.
The film was directed by Koji Yamamura, a highly respected independent animator known for his surrealist and textured aesthetic. In Bubble Bath, Yamamura utilized his signature stop-motion-inspired style and painterly techniques to explore themes of domestic routine and fleeting moments of comfort. The short was well-received upon its release for its whimsical atmosphere and technical craftsmanship, solidifying its place as a significant entry in the experimental anthology.
