Hideyoshi is a homeless boy living in New York in the near future, who survives by hustling other kids in basketball games. But now he's been drafted into a pro team with a very unique goal. There once was a time when humans dominated the game of basketball. But times have changed, and now the physically superior alien players have taken over the game, and there are barely any human players left. But Hideyoshi's team-the first all-human team to compete in the Space League-intends to change all that, and bring the championship back home to Earth.

Where it came from
Buzzer Beater was created by manga artist Takehiko Inoue, renowned for his seminal basketball series Slam Dunk. Originally published as a web manga in the late 1990s, the story centers on a ragtag group of Earthlings attempting to compete in an intergalactic basketball league dominated by physically superior aliens. The narrative serves as a departure from the grounded realism of Inoue's other sports works, opting instead for a science-fiction premise that highlights the fundamental human spirit against impossible odds.
The 2005 television adaptation was produced by TMS Entertainment to commemorate the studio's anniversary. The production team aimed to capture the kinetic energy of Inoue's character designs while navigating the technical constraints of early mid-2000s digital animation. Upon release, it was viewed as a niche project within the broader sports anime genre, noted primarily for its unique fusion of interplanetary space opera and traditional athletic competition themes rather than widespread mainstream success.
