Where it came from
Buzzer Beater is a Japanese sports anime series directed by Shigeyuki Miya and produced by TMS Entertainment. Based on the manga created by Takehiko Inoue, the series follows an underdog team of Earthlings who compete in an intergalactic basketball league. The project is notable for being one of the rare works by Inoue that leans into science fiction, expanding his portfolio beyond the grounded realism of his seminal basketball work, Slam Dunk.
The 2007 production served as the series' second season, picking up after the events of the 2005 adaptation. The animation style was designed to capture the high-energy, fast-paced nature of the sport while integrating the imaginative character designs of alien adversaries. Upon its release, it was received as a niche but spirited entry in the sports genre, appreciated by fans of Inoue’s distinct character-focused storytelling and his ability to translate the tension of a basketball game into an animated format.
