Where it came from
Cage was released in 2003 by the Milky Animation Label, a studio operating within the niche sector of Japanese adult animation during the early 2000s. Produced as a direct-to-video OVA, the project serves as a representative example of the studio's aesthetic and narrative focus during this period, which typically leaned into dark, psychological themes blended with experimental visual sequences.
The animation and character design for the title were created in-house by the Milky staff, who aimed to evoke a sense of claustrophobia and tension through muted color palettes and stark, simplified line work. Upon its release, the work was received primarily within enthusiast circles dedicated to the independent animation scene, noted for its unconventional pacing and atmospheric reliance rather than traditional narrative structure.
