Where it came from
Calamity of a Zombie Girl, known in Japan as Aru Zombie Shoujo no Sainan, was released in 2018 as an original net animation series. The project was produced by Studio GONZO in collaboration with Sting Entertainment and is based on the light novel series written by Ryou Ikehata. The narrative centers on a centuries-old girl named Euphrosyne who awakens in the modern day to find her cursed stone stolen, leading to a gore-filled clash with university students.
The animation reflects a pivot toward horror-comedy tropes, utilizing stylistic choices to balance grotesque action sequences with the absurd premise of its undead protagonist. While the series did not receive widespread critical acclaim, it remains a notable example of the late-2010s digital-first distribution model for niche light novel adaptations. The production aimed to translate the kinetic, violent energy of the source material into a concise animated format, targeting fans of the supernatural thriller genre.
