Candy Candy: Haru no Yobigoe

Released in 1978, Candy Candy: Haru no Yobigoe serves as a short film adaptation derived from the immensely popular Candy Candy manga series created by Kyoko Mizuki and Yumiko Igarashi. Produced by Toei Animation, the film was conceived during the height of the franchise's broadcast success, aiming to capitalize on the character's emotional resonance with television audiences. It functions as a cinematic expansion of the series' themes of resilience and coming-of-age, featuring the distinct character designs and visual aesthetic established in the ongoing TV animation.

The animation direction for the film reflects the signature style of Toei's late 1970s productions, prioritizing expressive character acting to convey the melodramatic tone central to the source material. While it was produced as a theatrical accompaniment, it is often viewed by scholars as a testament to the brand's cultural ubiquity in Japan at the time. The film was well-received by fans of the series, reinforcing the franchise's enduring status within the shojo demographic and maintaining the narrative continuity established by the television staff.
