Cao Chong Cheng Xiang

Released in 1982 by the Shanghai Animation Film Studio, Cao Chong Cheng Xiang (Cao Chong Weighs an Elephant) is a classic work of Chinese ink-wash animation. It adapts the historical anecdote from the Records of the Three Kingdoms, depicting the young and ingenious Cao Chong, son of the warlord Cao Cao, who devised a clever method to weigh a massive elephant by using displacement in a boat. The film was created during a period when the studio was refining the traditional art of ink-wash painting by integrating it with fluid character movement to educate and entertain younger audiences.

The production utilizes the distinctive aesthetic of Chinese traditional painting, where misty, calligraphic backgrounds evoke the atmosphere of the Three Kingdoms era. The film was directed by Yu Zheguang, a veteran of the studio known for his commitment to preserving cultural folk narratives through puppetry and animation. Upon its release, it was well-received for its gentle pedagogical tone and technical artistry, serving as a staple of mid-20th-century Chinese cinema that emphasized wisdom and ingenuity over strength.
