Where it came from
Canvas 2: Rainbow Colored Sketch was produced by studio ZEXCS and released in 2005 as a television anime adaptation of the visual novel developed by F&C FC01. The series emerged during a period of high interest in romance-themed visual novel adaptations, focusing on the emotional growth and artistic pursuits of students at an art academy. Its production sought to translate the character-driven narrative of the source material into an episodic format that emphasized the aesthetic sensibilities of the art school setting.
The character designs for the anime were handled by Hirokazu Hisayuki, who aimed to capture the distinct visual style of the original game while adapting the aesthetics for television animation. The series follows the protagonist Hiroki Kamikura, a former prodigy painter who lost his passion for art, as he navigates relationships and recovers his creative drive. Upon its release, it was received as a standard entry in the romance genre of the mid-2000s, noted primarily by fans of the original visual novel for its focus on the relationship dynamics between the central cast.
