Where it came from
Cardfight!! Vanguard overDress Season 2, released in 2021, serves as the direct continuation of the rebooted Vanguard franchise animated by Gift-o’-Animation. It was developed to expand upon the foundations laid by the first season, focusing on the intricate personal dynamics of Team Blackout while evolving the game's high-stakes card battle aesthetic. The series aimed to blend traditional shonen-style progression with a more grounded, character-driven narrative approach compared to earlier iterations of the franchise.
The character designs were heavily influenced by the distinct artistic style of the manga group CLAMP, who provided the original concept designs for the series. This creative collaboration was intended to give the reboot a modern, sleek visual identity that appealed to both long-time fans of the card game and newcomers to the series. The season was received as a stylistic departure that emphasized emotional stakes alongside the strategic mechanics of the Vanguard card game, solidifying its place in the modern landscape of trading card game adaptations.
