Where it came from
Celestial Bonds, known in its original Chinese market as 'Lian Qi,' is a prominent example of the 3D computer-animated ONA format produced by iQIYI. Launched during a period of rapid expansion for Chinese streaming platforms into the high-fantasy xianxia genre, the series was designed to showcase the studio's technical capabilities in rendering intricate martial arts combat and elaborate, ethereal costume designs rooted in traditional aesthetics.
The series draws heavily from established tropes of the web-novel adaptation culture, emphasizing cultivation, destiny, and the interplay between mortal and spiritual realms. It was developed to capitalize on the growing domestic appetite for long-form narrative animation that balances character-driven drama with fast-paced action, reflecting a shift in how iQIYI curates its proprietary intellectual property to compete with both global streaming giants and traditional television animation.
