Cells at Work! CODE BLACK was produced by studio LIDENFILMS and released in 2021 as a spin-off to the popular educational series, Cells at Work!. While the original series focused on a healthy body, this iteration shifts the perspective to a body suffering from the effects of unhealthy lifestyle choices such as stress, smoking, and alcohol consumption. It serves as a more mature, starkly realistic, and often grim counterpart to the flagship series, highlighting the physiological consequences of systemic poor health.

The series adaptation was directed by Hideyo Yamamoto with character designs by Eiji Abiko, who aimed to translate the more intense and gritty tone of the original manga into an animated medium. The design choices emphasize the frantic, high-pressure environment of a failing biological system, utilizing a harsher visual palette compared to the lighthearted aesthetics of the source material. Upon its release, it was noted by critics for successfully bridging the gap between educational content and the high-stakes narrative style typical of survival-themed anime.
