CHAINSAW BUNNY: Deleted Scene

Chainsaw Bunny: Deleted Scene was released in 2018 as part of the digital-first evolution of the Chainsaw Bunny project. Created by independent artist Jhonen Vasquez, the series explores themes of dark humor and surrealist frustration through the titular character, a manifestation of chaotic, destructive impulses. This specific entry serves as a self-aware meta-commentary on the creative process, presenting a storyboard-style narrative that frames its existence as an artifact discarded during the production of a larger work.

The aesthetic of this piece adheres to Vasquez’s signature gothic, angular art style, characterized by high-contrast line work and an unsettling, kinetic energy. By framing the item as a 'deleted scene' within the ONA format, the work leans into the internet-era trend of transparency and behind-the-scenes content. It was received by fans as a quintessential example of the creator's cynical yet whimsical brand, highlighting the transition of independent animation from traditional distribution to direct-to-audience digital release.
