Chi Jian Chuanqi

Chi Jian Chuanqi, known in English as The Legend of Sword and Fairy or Chinese Paladin, was produced in 2005 based on the highly influential 1995 role-playing video game by Softstar Entertainment. Created during a period of burgeoning interest in adapting domestic gaming intellectual property for television, the series was produced to capture the romantic and fantasy-driven narrative of the source material for a mass audience. It became a seminal entry in the xianxia genre, blending wuxia martial arts tropes with traditional Chinese mythology and fantasy elements.

The production sought to emphasize the emotional arcs of its leads, Li Xiaoyao and Zhao Ling'er, while modernizing the aesthetic of historical Chinese period dramas through stylized costume design and early digital effects. Upon its release, the series received significant acclaim for its atmospheric storytelling and the breakout performances of its cast, effectively launching the careers of several major stars. It is widely credited with establishing the blueprint for the xianxia television genre, which has remained a dominant force in Chinese media in the decades since.
