Where it came from
Released in 2016, this educational ONA—titled Chiba Pedal: Yowamushi Pedal to Manabu Jitensha Koutsuu Anzen—was commissioned by the Chiba Prefectural Police to promote cycling safety among students and residents. Utilizing the popularity of the Wataru Watanabe sports manga series, Yowamushi Pedal, the short animation was designed to align with the series' established aesthetic while serving a pragmatic public service function. It features the series' core characters providing accessible, friendly demonstrations of proper road etiquette and bicycle maintenance.
The animation serves as a cross-promotion between the local government's traffic safety campaign and the influential anime franchise based in Chiba Prefecture. By leveraging the familiar, high-energy character dynamics of the Sohoku High Bicycle Club, the producers aimed to lower the barrier to engagement for younger demographics, making essential safety regulations feel integrated into the fandom experience rather than purely instructional. The project received positive attention for its integration of government outreach with contemporary pop-culture branding.
