They may have just won their most coveted karuta tournament, but members of the Mizusawa karuta team still have a long way to go. Each member chases their dreams, and with a win under their collective belt, those dreams are closer in reach than ever. Chihaya Ayase is determined to challenge Wakamiya Shinobu and win the title of Queen, and Taichi Mashima is ready to take on Arata Wataya now that he’s made it into the most elite of karuta players — but an unexpected revelation will deal these karuta players a hand none of them saw coming.

Where it came from
Chihayafuru 3 serves as the third installment in the acclaimed anime adaptation of Yuki Suetsugu's manga, which explores the world of competitive karuta. Produced by studio Madhouse and directed by Morio Asaka, this season continues the narrative of Chihaya Ayase as she balances her devotion to the sport with the evolving dynamics of her relationships. The production retains the series' hallmark aesthetic, which emphasizes fluid, expressive character designs and a sensitive approach to the internal growth of its ensemble cast.
The 2019 series arrived after a significant hiatus, reuniting the core production staff to conclude the high school arcs of the source material. It was crafted with a focus on capturing the intensity and intellectual rigor of competitive karuta, utilizing detailed animation to portray the sport's rapid pace. Upon release, the season was well-received by critics and longtime viewers for its narrative depth and consistent visual fidelity, successfully maintaining the emotional resonance established in previous seasons.
