Based on a series of Chiikawa comics posted on X by Nagano from March to November 2023, known as the "Siren Arc".
One day, while Chiikawa and Hachiware were relaxing in the square, Usagi suddenly appeared with a flyer stuck to its face. When Hachiware checked the flyer, it was an invitation reading “Special Invitation to a Special Island.”
Lured by promises like “Get 100x rewards for simple island quests!” and “Limited-edition island ramen, exclusive sweets—sweet and spicy treats all practically free!”, Chiikawa and the others decided to go on the island retreat. Boarding the ship alongside Rakko, who was suspicious of the flyer's contents, the group landed on the island... only to find something waiting for them there...!?

Where it came from
Chiikawa: Ningyo no Shima no Himitsu was released in 2026 as a major cinematic expansion of the popular Chiikawa franchise created by the illustrator Nagano. Following the success of the character's television anime and various multimedia adaptations, this film was developed by Toho to provide a feature-length narrative centered on the mysterious Mermaid Island. The story continues the series' established tone, balancing whimsical character interactions with the unsettling, often surreal environments that define the Chiikawa universe.
The film's visual design remains faithful to Nagano's original art style, characterized by simple, expressive line work that contrasts with the detailed and occasionally eerie world-building. Produced to appeal to both younger fans and the substantial adult demographic drawn to the series' dark undercurrents, the movie was a significant milestone in the franchise's commercial growth. It was received as a key entry in the series, further solidifying the cultural footprint of the diminutive, resilient protagonists within the Japanese media landscape.
