Chiisai Sensuikan ni Koi o Shita Dekasugiru Kujira no Hanashi

Chiisai Sensuikan ni Koi o Shita Dekasugiru Kujira no Hanashi, known as The Story of the Giant Whale That Fell in Love With a Little Submarine, was released in 2004 as a special production by Shin-Ei Animation. It represents a niche entry in the studio's portfolio, emerging during a period where Shin-Ei was balancing its long-running staples like Doraemon with smaller, standalone projects that experimented with whimsical storytelling and distinct visual styles.

The production was crafted as a heartfelt, atmospheric short, focusing on a surrealist fable that balances themes of scale and unlikely connection. The visual direction reflects the studio's mid-2000s approach to animation, utilizing a softer palette to emphasize the emotional contrast between the colossal whale and the diminutive submarine. While it remains a deep cut for casual viewers, it is well-regarded among collectors of Shin-Ei’s experimental shorts for its gentle tone and artistic ambition.
