Chiisana Jumbo

Chiisana Jumbo, released in 1977, represents a notable entry in Sanrio's mid-1970s effort to expand their brand beyond stationery and character goods into feature-length animation. Produced during a period when the company was actively seeking to establish a cinematic presence, the film tells the story of an elephant with unusually large ears, exploring themes of belonging and self-acceptance that align with the empathetic ethos central to Sanrio’s character designs.

The production was helmed by director Tetsuo Imazawa, who brought a traditional cel-animation aesthetic to the project. While the film was not as commercially pervasive as the studio's later, more globally recognized media properties, it serves as a distinct historical marker of Sanrio’s early experimentation with storytelling. The art style reflects the soft, rounded character aesthetics typical of the era’s Japanese animation, aiming to resonate with young audiences through sentimental narrative arcs.
