Where it came from
Chikatetsu ni Noru, or Riding the Subway, was produced in 2017 by the animation studio Ekachi Epilka. Released as an original net animation, this short film served as a promotional piece designed to highlight the Sapporo Municipal Subway system in Hokkaido, Japan. It functions as a slice-of-life vignette that captures the rhythmic, everyday atmosphere of commuting through the lens of local urban transit.
The production leans into a soft, atmospheric aesthetic, aiming to evoke a sense of quiet familiarity rather than traditional high-octane anime tropes. By focusing on the interplay between the subway environment and the passengers, the short emphasizes a grounded, realistic visual style. It was received primarily as a regional cultural artifact, noted for its understated charm and its successful use of animation to foster public affection for local infrastructure.
