Where it came from
Chimimo was produced by Shin-Ei Animation and debuted in 2022 as a whimsical addition to the studio's long-standing catalog of character-driven comedy series. The project was conceived as a lighthearted exploration of the chaotic cohabitation between a mysterious, demonic messenger from the underworld and a family of ordinary siblings. The narrative reflects the studio's signature approach to slice-of-life storytelling, blending supernatural elements with mundane domestic humor to appeal to a broad, family-oriented demographic.
The character designs were overseen by Kanae Itō, with the visual aesthetic emphasizing round, expressive forms intended to make the otherworldly antagonist appear more endearing than threatening. The series aimed to provide a comforting, low-stakes viewing experience during its broadcast run, focusing on themes of odd-couple friendships and the unexpected bonds that form under pressure. Upon its release, it was noted for its distinct, soft art style and the humorous contrast between its titular character's sinister origins and his ultimately harmless personality.
