The "school sword action" story revolves around Magic Knights, modern magic-users who fight with weapons converted from their souls. Ikki Kurogane goes to a school for these Magic Knights, but he is the "Failed Knight" or "Worst One" who is failing because he has no magical skills. However, one day, he is challenged to a duel by Stella, a foreign princess and the "Number One" student. In this duel, "the loser must be obedient for life."

Where it came from
Chivalry of a Failed Knight was produced by Silver Link and Nexus in 2015 as an adaptation of the light novel series written by Riku Misora. The series emerged during a period of high popularity for the fantasy-action genre in Japanese animation, specifically focusing on the 'magic school battle' trope. It centers on Ikki Kurogane, a student considered a failure due to his lack of magical talent, who strives to become a top-tier knight.
The character designs were handled by Seiichi Shirane, who adapted the original illustrations by Won. The series was designed to emphasize a balance between fast-paced combat choreography and intimate character development. Upon its release, it received modest critical attention for its earnest approach to the underdog narrative, effectively distinguishing itself from similar series of the era through its focused romantic subplot and consistent technical animation quality.
