Chobits: Chibits - Sumomo, Kotoko Todokeru

The Chobits: Chibits - Sumomo and Kotoko Todokeru special was released in 2003, serving as a direct continuation of the visual and thematic language established by the MADHOUSE television adaptation of CLAMP's manga. These short episodes were designed to expand upon the whimsical, chibi-style characterizations of the portable computer dolls Sumomo and Kotoko, focusing on their comedic interactions within the technological landscape of the series. The project highlights the studio’s commitment to capturing the delicate aesthetic defined by CLAMP, utilizing simplified character models to emphasize the lighthearted, episodic nature of the source material.

The creative direction for these shorts was centered on character-driven humor that leveraged the established contrast between the high-functioning, miniaturized androids and the human world. By focusing on Sumomo and Kotoko, the animators explored the light side of the narrative's central question regarding the intersection of artificial intelligence and human companionship. Upon its release, the special was well-received by fans of the original series who sought an extension of the franchise's softer, slice-of-life elements, marking a shift toward the more playful side of the studio's technical capabilities during that period.
