Synopsis

Ranma is a poor private detective with a strong sense of justice. His partner, Rella, is a thrill-seeking rich girl. They make for an odd couple on the dangerous streets of Kirin Town, until a run-in with a mafia boss ends up in a near-fatal car accident. Ranma wakes up at the scene, but it is days later and Rella is nowhere in sight. He gets back on the case to find out what happened to his partner, but at the stroke of midnight, a metamorphosis occurs, as Ranma is replaced by Rella. Now every day is a race against time as the two detectives, somehow working together though always apart, try to get their normal bodies back while taking on cases and struggling to survive against the city’s vilest villains.

Provenance

Where it came from

Cinderella Boy was produced by the studio Magic Bus and aired as a thirteen-episode television series in 2003. It represents a creative departure for manga artist Monkey Punch, the creator of Lupin III, who authored the original manga series in the early 1980s. The narrative centers on a private detective who shares a body with a female thief, a high-concept premise designed to leverage the comedic and action-oriented tropes typical of hard-boiled noir pastiches.

The animation style and character designs reflect the aesthetic sensibilities of the early 2000s anime industry, characterized by a transition toward digital ink and paint processes. While the series carries the stylistic DNA of Monkey Punch’s previous works, it received a relatively niche reception upon release. It remains a notable curiosity for fans of the author’s bibliography, serving as an example of his long-standing interest in dual-identity protagonists and slapstick criminal capers.
