Where it came from
Clarinet Kowashichatta, or 'I Broke the Clarinet,' is a short animated music video that premiered on the NHK television program Minna no Uta in 1972. The piece was created as part of NHK’s long-standing initiative to provide high-quality musical and visual programming for children, blending traditional storytelling with experimental animation techniques popular in the Japanese broadcast industry during the early 1970s.
The animation is characterized by its whimsical, folk-inspired visual style, which serves as a backdrop to the song's narrative about a clumsy but earnest musician. As with many shorts produced for the Minna no Uta series, it was designed by a rotating collective of animators and graphic artists contracted by the network. Upon its release, it became a staple of the network's rotation, earning a modest but enduring reputation among viewers for its gentle humor and charmingly rustic aesthetic.
