The manga's story centers on the 15-year-old high school student and manga creator Kaoruko Moeta, who uses the pen name Chaos. After ranking at the bottom of a reader survey, Kaoruko's editor recommends that she enter an all-female dormitory for manga creators. Kaoruko's roommates are shoujo manga creator Koyume Koizuka, teen romance manga creator Ruki Irokawa, and shounen manga creator Tsubasa Katsuki. The girls support each other as they work to become better manga creators.

Where it came from
Comic Girls was produced by Studio Nexus and aired as a television series in 2018, adapted from the four-panel manga by Kaori Hanzawa. The series centers on a group of teenage manga artists living in a specialized dormitory, exploring the intersection of creative aspirations and daily adolescence. It emerged during a period of rising interest in workplace-adjacent slice-of-life anime, aiming to provide a gentle, humorous look at the editorial processes and personal struggles inherent in the manga industry.
The character designs were handled by Yoshiko Saito, who focused on a soft, rounded aesthetic to reflect the lighthearted tone of the source material. The series was generally well-received by audiences for its warm depiction of friendship and its meta-commentary on the creative process. It is often cited by fans for its balanced approach to blending comedy with the genuine anxieties faced by aspiring artists, maintaining a consistent following within the moe subgenre.
