Crayon Shin-chan the Movie: The Legend Called Buri Buri 3 Minutes Charge

Released in 2005, Crayon Shin-chan: The Legend Called Buri Buri 3 Minutes Charge is the thirteenth feature film in the long-running anime franchise created by Yoshito Usui. Produced by Shin-Ei Animation and distributed by Toho, the film arrived during a period when the series was transitioning toward high-concept, genre-bending narratives that parodied tokusatsu and superhero tropes to appeal to both younger audiences and adult fans of the original manga's irreverent humor.

Directed and storyboarded by Mitsuru Hongo, the film features a distinctive meta-narrative where Shin-chan and his family are granted the ability to transform into superheroes to fight monsters that appear in three-minute intervals. The design work leans heavily into the contrast between the show's simplistic, iconic character art and elaborate, costumed transformation sequences, reflecting Hongo’s background in balancing slapstick comedy with the kinetic energy characteristic of mid-2000s Japanese animation.
