Crescent rise

Crescent Rise refers to a high-energy, pivotal sequence featured in the final episodes of the 2013 anime series Kill la Kill, produced by Studio TRIGGER. The sequence was born from the studio's mandate to push the boundaries of traditional animation, utilizing a distinct, sharp aesthetic that favored kinetic movement over fluid realism. It emerged during a time when the studio, founded by former Gainax animators, sought to establish a signature identity defined by hyper-stylized action and unconventional framing.

The sequence was overseen by director Hiroyuki Imaishi and character designer Sushio, who sought to heighten the emotional stakes of the series through exaggerated proportions and vibrant color palettes. Its design reflects the studio’s commitment to 'limited animation' techniques that maximize impact through deliberate composition. Upon its release, the visual language of the sequence was praised for its cohesion with the show’s rebellious tone, securing its place as a representative example of TRIGGER's early influence on modern Japanese animation.
