Crushers: intergalactic Jacks-of-All-Trades who will take on any assignment for the right price. Crusher Joe heads a small team of these outer space troubleshooters that includes the cyborg Talos, the beautiful Alfin, and the obligatory kid sidekick Ricky. A routine assignment escorting a cryogenically frozen heiress to a medical facility goes awry when the girl goes missing and Joe and his team are left holding the bag. It seems space pirates are trying to play the Crushers for patsies, but Joe doesn’t take kindly to the setup and tracks the pirates to their home world. The four heroes not only have to rescue their human cargo but take down the pirates in the process, which involves a heck of a lot of space dogfights, explosions, and good old-fashioned hand-to-hand combat.

Where it came from
Released in 1983, Crusher Joe: The Movie was produced by Sunrise to expand upon the popular science fiction light novel series written by Haruka Takachiho. The film serves as a high-octane space opera, focusing on a group of freelance problem solvers who operate in a lawless galactic environment. It was directed by Takachiho himself, marking a rare instance of a light novel author taking the reins of their own adaptation to ensure the aesthetic matched the source material.
The film is notable for its intricate mechanical designs and lush animation, which captured the specific retro-futuristic aesthetic of the early 1980s. The production design was heavily influenced by Yoshikazu Yasuhiko, whose character designs provided a grounded, gritty look that contrasted with the more whimsical anime of the era. Upon its release, it was lauded for its production value and remains a significant milestone in the development of the space adventure genre in Japanese animation.
