Daddy Long-Legs

Daddy Long-Legs, or Ashinaga Ojisan, was produced by Tatsunoko Production in 1979 as a special animated television film. It was part of a broader cultural movement in Japan during the late 1970s to adapt classic Western literature into high-quality anime, aiming to provide educational and emotionally resonant content for family audiences. This adaptation focused on the epistolary format of Jean Webster's 1912 novel, centering on the orphaned Jerusha Abbott and her mysterious benefactor.

The production sought to capture the refined, earnest aesthetic common in Tatsunoko’s character-driven dramas of the era. The animation emphasized character expression and delicate line work to translate the internal narrative of the original letters into visual storytelling. While it remains a niche entry compared to the long-running World Masterpiece Theater series, it is well-regarded by collectors of 1970s animation for its faithfulness to the source material's sentimental tone and its specific place in Tatsunoko's diverse studio history.
