But no man is a haunted island, and Keitarou eventually reintegrates with society by getting a part-time job as a tutor to the child prodigy Yayoi Houzuki. Yayoi isn’t just an academic genius, though. Where it came from
Dark Gathering originated as a horror-manga series written and illustrated by Kenichi Kondo, which began serialization in Jump Square in 2019. The story follows Keitaro Gentoga, a young man with the ability to attract ghosts, and his effort to help a young girl named Yayoi Hozuki capture dangerous spirits to find a ghost who took her mother. The narrative blends traditional Japanese ghost folklore with modern thriller elements, emphasizing psychological dread alongside its supernatural encounters.
The 2023 television anime adaptation was produced by studio OLM and directed by Hiroshi Ikehata. The production aimed to translate Kondo's detailed, atmospheric artwork into a medium that could effectively pace the slow-burn horror and sudden, intense action sequences. Upon its release, the series was recognized for its unique character designs and its commitment to maintaining the unsettling tone of the original source material, positioning it as a distinct entry within the contemporary horror anime genre.
