In Tokyo, an impenetrable field known as "Hell's Gate" appeared ten years ago. At the same time, psychics who wield paranormal powers at the cost of their conscience also emerged. Hei is one of the most powerful of these psychic agents, and along with his blind associate, Yin, works for one of the many rival agencies vying to unlock the mysteries of Hell's Gate.

Where it came from
Darker than Black was produced by the acclaimed animation studio Bones and originally broadcast in Japan in 2007. Directed and written by Tensai Okamura, the series emerged during a period when the studio was solidifying its reputation for high-octane action sequences and philosophical narrative depth. It was conceived as an original anime project, allowing the creative team to build an intricate, moody world centered on the appearance of the Hell's Gate in Tokyo and the emergence of contractors—individuals who gain supernatural powers at the cost of their humanity.
The character designs, credited to Yoko Kanno's frequent collaborator Yuji Iwahara, lean into a grounded, noir-inspired aesthetic that contrasts sharply with the surreal combat scenes. The show was received as a sophisticated addition to the supernatural thriller genre, praised for its episodic storytelling that slowly unraveled the overarching mystery of the syndicate. While it captures the melancholic tone typical of mid-2000s psychological anime, its tight pacing and evocative atmosphere have helped it maintain a steady presence in the medium's cult history.
