Where it came from
Dark Cat, originally released in Japan in 1991, is an adult-oriented original video animation (OVA) produced during the height of the direct-to-video anime boom. It emerged from the experimental and often provocative landscape of the late eighties and early nineties, when independent studios sought to capitalize on the home video market by creating content that pushed the boundaries of genre and subject matter.
The production relies on the dark, atmospheric aesthetics common to the horror-fantasy subgenre of the era. Designed to be a compact, self-contained supernatural narrative, it follows a protagonist embroiled in a battle against demonic entities. While it remains a niche entry within the vast catalog licensed by Media Blasters for North American distribution, it is frequently cited by enthusiasts of early nineties exploitation anime for its distinctive, gritty character designs and its reflection of the period's stylistic transition toward more visceral animation.
