Two years after the catastrophic tidal wave that swept over Japan, police officer Kiyomasa Senji is trying to make the world a safer place. Using his Branch of Sin powers, he stops criminals in whatever ways he can. After rescuing a boy named Izuru Tsukiyoshi from a gang called Goreless Peace, the conflict between Kiyomasa and his adversaries heats up rapidly, to the point of being explosive.

Where it came from
Deadman Wonderland: The Red Knife Wielder was released in 2011 as an original video animation produced by studio Manglobe. It serves as an accompaniment to the 2011 anime adaptation of the manga series written by Jinsei Kataoka and illustrated by Kazuma Kondou. The project was conceived to flesh out the backstory of the character Senji Kiyomasa, providing viewers with additional narrative depth regarding his life before his incarceration within the titular prison.
The production maintains the gritty, hyper-violent aesthetic established in the main series, reflecting Manglobe's stylistic approach to high-stakes seinen storytelling. The character designs were overseen by Masakazu Eguchi, who translated the complex, grim art style of the manga into animation. While the original anime series received mixed reviews due to its condensed pacing and deviations from the source material, this OVA is generally regarded by fans as a faithful and technically proficient expansion of the show's dark, dystopian world.
